Phoenix 100 Race Report
March 20, Phoenix International Raceway, Phoenix, Arizona
The stage for the Infinity Pro Series, already in the second race of the season, shifted to Phoenix, Arizona. This time the racing was held at the Phoenix International Raceway, situated in the desert where numbers of giant cactus spike the landscape. With each lap only one mile (1.6 kilometers) long, this is the shortest race track with the lowest average speeds of the season. The different sizes of the corners and angles of the banks make this quite a quirky course. In the approach to the corners, drivers must just touch their brakes and depending on the situation, shift down. In addition, throughout this long race, it is vital to maintain a stable handling balance. In a 100-lap final, what is important is whether the driver can respond to constantly changing conditions.

The race, which started at 2.45 in the afternoon, became a one-man show dominated by second-time entrant, Brazilian Thiago Medeiros. In the opening series, Medeiros was robbed of victory by rookie Phil Giebler, even though he had maintained the lead until the last five laps, but this time he recorded the top times right from the practice lap and secured winning place in the heats. In the final he led every lap of the 100-lap race and finished in the same form, becoming points leader in the aggregate with his second win since the final last year. And in this race, Medeiros lapped all other drivers, including the second place getter.
"I can't believe it. The car understeered just a little but I was able to keep up a good rhythm. On this track, when you get behind somebody, the understeering is a pain and there is nothing you can do. So immediately after the start [he was in pole position], I told myself 'this will be my day'." Medeiros came to the interview in the victory lane wrapped in a large Brazilian flag.

With Medeiros' teammate Arie Luyendyk Jr. in second place, the Sam Schmidt Motorsports Team secured both first and second places for the first time in the history of the Series.

In third place was Leonardo Maia, making his debut in the Series. Maia, a Brazilian born American, was champion of last year's BarberDodge Pro Series. While nearly all of the events he has entered so far have been road races, his talent quickly showed through even on this unfamiliar oval course. It appears that because the BarberDodge Pro Series was dropped this year, many drivers as well as Maia resolved to enter the Infinity Pro Series.
The upcoming third Series will be raced at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the home of the Indy Car Race, as a support event to the Indy 500. Combined tests and rookie tests will be held in advance of the Series on April 25 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and still more drivers are expected to enter this third Series. The Infinity Pro Series, which costs around $40,000 per race to enter, depending on the configuration, will continue to attract increasing attention.
