Thiago Medeiros Notches Up Second Win of Season
Freedom 100 Race Report
May 22, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indiana
The third race of the Infiniti Pro Series one-make race for vehicles using Nissan's VQ engine was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, legendary ground in American motorsports. This year, too, the race was held as a support event for this year's Indy 500, the world's biggest race event. Racing at this venue holds special meaning for drivers aiming at future participation in Indy car racing events. For this reason, this was a very important race in the series.

The race attracted 17 entries. In the qualifying session held the day before, Brazilian Thiago Medeiros secured pole position (with an average speed over two laps of 189.274 mph or 302.83 kph). Medeiros held the lap lead for 35 laps of the 40-lap or 100-mile (160-kilometer) race, and notched up his second straight win after Phoenix. This performance marked Medeiros' second win this season at the renowned Indianapolis venue and he succeeded in becoming the individual top driver in series points as well.

The race started at 1:00 p.m. in extremely muggy conditions of 30ºC. As the leading group began their approach to the first corner from the front straight, which is about one kilometer in length, the top three were lined up across the track and entered the corner in that formation. The front wheels of Jeff Simmons, who started from third position in the preliminaries, touched the rear wheels of leader Medeiros as the two engaged in a ferocious dual. But Medeiros managed to somehow shake off Simmons and maintain his lead.
Simmons, who entered on a spot participation basis, was extremely excited at the possibility of spot participation in this year's Indy 500 from Mode Nunn Racing, the team to which Japanese racer Toranosuke Takagi belongs.

In the third lap, a crash occurred and a caution was issued, but when that was processed, the race restarted from the fifth lap. Just as he approached the control line where the green flag was coming down, Simmons forced his way to the inside of Medeiros, at the front of the pack at that point, and shot out in the top position. However, that day the wind was very strong, and Simmon s car was afflicted by extreme understeering. Taking the weather conditions into account, Medeiros made the decision to set quite a strong down force, and only yielded the lead for five laps to Simmons, then retook the top position.
fter that, Simmons' efforts seemed to flag and the gap between the two lengthened as Medeiros turned the event into a one-man race. In the final two laps, Mexican Ronaldo Quintanilla crashed on turn 4, and when the checkered flag came down, the yellow was still on.

The Sam Schmidt Motorsports Team, to which race winner Medeiros belongs, has announced an agreement with Japanese driver Kashima. Racer Kashima participated until last year in the BarberDodge Pro Series in the United States, is already experienced in racing on oval courses. On June 7, he participated in joint tests held at the Kentucky Speedway and plans to participate in two races this season, including one in California.

Round 4 of the Infiniti Pro Series will be held at the Kansas Speedway, Kansas, on July 4. This will be a high-speed course with each lap 1.5 miles long.
