THREE TOP-10 FINISHES FOR NISSAN MOTORSPORT AT QUEENSLAND RACEWAY

2013 V8 Supercars Championship Race Report

IPSWICH, Australia (July 27th-28th, 2013)

  • James Moffat earns 10th place in Saturday '60/60' race
  • Todd and Rick Kelly score double top-10 finishes on Sunday

Nissan Motorsport salvaged three top-10 results during the Coates Hire Ipswich 360 at Queensland Raceway over the weekend, Event 8 of the 2013 V8 Supercars Championship.

After frustratingly slow qualifying performances, the Nissan quartet used excellent race speed and reliability to good effect.

The Jack Daniel's Nissan Altimas of Rick Kelly and Todd Kelly finished ninth and 10th in the final race of the weekend, while Norton Nissan driver James Moffat finished 10th in the first race on Saturday.

Todd Kelly's 10th-place result is the best race finish he has achieved in the all-new Nissan Altima.

Todd and Rick Kelly also celebrated milestone races in the V8 Supercars Championship category over the course of the weekend. Todd racked up his 400th race start, while Rick started his 350th.

The team's fourth driver Michael Caruso had a difficult weekend after being the innocent victim in a crash on Saturday, damaging his car. Like the other three Nissan drivers, qualifying was a weakness and Caruso lined up 28th for the final race. He produced a solid drive to take 16th.

The Nissan Motorsport team will enjoy its first test since February when all four Nissan Altima V8 Supercars get track time at Winton Motor Raceway next week, before racing at Event 9 of the championship at the same circuit on August 23-25.

Todd Kelly - #7 Jack Daniel's Nissan Altima
“I qualified a lot better for the last race, starting 15th, but again there was some really average driving out there and I went back to the mid-20s early on in the race. Guys were just running me straight off the track on exits,‘ said Todd Kelly.
“I had to really use the car quite hard to get those positions back in the first third of the race and I was probably a little bit too aggressive and had a bit too much wheel spin, which didn't leave me much for the end of the race. Every time I had clear track the Altima was extremely fast, so it's a shame we couldn't convert that into a better result because the car was certainly capable of it.‘

Rick Kelly - #15 Jack Daniel's Nissan Altima
“I'm excited by that last race. We normally have a great result on Saturday and a worse result on Sunday, so it's fantastic to leave the race weekend with the best result we got here in Ipswich,‘ said Rick Kelly.
“Sunday was again a mixed day, we had qualifying results that were up and down and we had race results that were up and down. The car in the first race was a little bit tough on me and we got bumped around a bit in both races, but for the second one, EP (Erik Pender) tuned it up for me and we managed to drive back through the field after (Jono) Webb punted us off, all the way up to ninth. We just need a little bit more mumbo on the straights so we can qualify higher up and we could definitely race there as well. All in all an exciting weekend for us that was full of progress.‘

James Moffat - #360 Norton Hornets Nissan Altima
“I'm definitely pleased with Saturday's result, it was a solid day for us. Anytime you sneak into the top 10 in this category, it's pretty good,‘ said James Moffat.
“Considering what we're dealing with in regards to the motor's deficiencies, the result was about as good as we could have asked for. Sunday was pretty average, and to be fair, we only finished where we did in the last race because of others' failures. We need to go back and have a look at why we lost some competitiveness. We clearly didn't do a good enough job.‘

Michael Caruso - #36 Norton Nissan Altima
“It was a tough weekend. We need to go home and re-evaluate what's going on,‘ said Michael Caruso.
“There was speed with some of our cars during stages of the weekend, so we need to assess why we didn't have that in qualifying. It was good to move from 28th up to 16th. There were a few positives there, but really, I just want to think about Winton now. It's the team's test track, we've got a test day coming up before the meeting, so all our focus needs to be placed on improving our results there.‘
