TRIPLE TOP 10 FOR NISSANS AT BARBAGALLO RACEWAY

V8 Supercars Championship Race Report - Perth 400

Perth, Australia (May 16-18, 2014) - Todd Kelly has given Nissan Motorsports a boost of confidence with two storming drives at Barbagallo Raceway where the West Australian round of the Australian V8 Supercars was held over May 17-18.

Kelly, driving the #7 Jack Daniel's Racing Nissan Altima, qualified 18th for Saturday's first race and ripped through the field, passing 10 cars on his way to eighth place. He started the second race of the day from 25th place, and climbed up nine places to finish a well-deserved 16th.

On Sunday's race, James Moffat and Michael Caruso salvaged a rewarding double 10 finish. After a disappointing qualifying session that yielded rear grid starts, Moffat and Caruso finished a fighting eighth and 10th respectively. The results have launched the pair back up the championship ladder with Caruso back in 13th place overall, one place ahead of Moffat. For the Jack Daniel's Nissan pair of Rick and Todd Kelly, a consistent race saw them come home in 14th and 16th place respectively.

DRIVER QUOTES

James Moffat, #360 Norton Nissan Altima
“Any day you qualify 24th and finish eighth, you have to be reasonably happy. The car was consistent in the race, our strategy was really good and I was able to run to a pace that was comfortable for me and the car. It was a good recovery, but it's obvious that we need to qualify better. Perhaps if we start the race further up the grid, we could challenge for better results. There's definitely a lot of work to do on the qualifying side. We have a five-week break ahead of us, which includes an important test day, so we need to recharge our batteries but not lose sight [of the fact] that we still have a lot of work to do.”

Michael Caruso, #36 Norton Nissan Altima
“It was good to finish the weekend on a high. It's obvious that our car is a better race car than a qualifying car. We have a chance to rectify that at the test day coming up, so I'm looking forward to getting to Winton and having some new items to test. Hopefully the rewards we get from the test can help us qualify better and be in a much stronger position at Darwin. With the tire degradation up there, it will be a similar type of race to here. If we can get a car that handles well in qualifying and gets the most out of qualifying, we could potentially have a very good result.”

Todd Kelly, #7 Jack Daniel's Nissan Altima
“The first race on Saturday was alright, being only a few spots up the grid makes all of the difference. Starting dead last in that second race, you just have to take a little bit too much out of the tires to try and move forward early. I was struggling there at the end of each stint, but it was the best I could do. If we were a little bit further up to start with, and not off the back row, we would have climbed up further.”

Rick Kelly, #15 Jack Daniel's Nissan Altima
“It's tough to look after your tires around here, we gave it our best shot here on Sunday, and we had a huge improvement from the car overnight. We learned a bit in that race, but just not as much as the others. We need to put our head down and figure out how to make progress like that, it's good to have that knowledge within the team, just for us it's not quite where we want it.”
