The venue for the second country's round of the FIA GT1 World Championship was Britain's Silverstone Circuit. With a hugely changed layout, the circuit was completely different. Showing its importance, the FIA GT1 was chosen as the opening event of the renovated track.

As with the opening round of the series, there were 4 examples of NISSAN GT-R on hand. The performance tuning of each car was reviewed after the last race, and the GT-R was relieved of 50kgs. The Swiss Racing Team adjusted their cars very carefully in preparation for race week.

For the Sumo Power team, Silverstone is their home circuit. Apart from German Michael Krumm, the team's other three drivers are all British. It wasn't only families and friends, but many race fans also paid attention to all their movements.

The Practice sessions began on Friday. Right from when they started running, they showed renewed strength with a completely revised plan from the previous round. This time, the Aston Martin and NISSAN GT-R entries showed increased performance and set good times.

Among the GT-Rs, the pair of Sumo Power entries showed particularly good form, with 3rd place going to the #23 (Michael Krumm) and 5th to the #22 (Warren Hughes) entries in the one-hour knockout qualifying session held on Saturday morning.

Meanwhile both of the Swiss Racing Team entries, despite feeling right, were unable to improve on their times. This was put down to less than optimal suspension set-ups on the cars. Little by little the settings were changed, but this brought no major changes.

Saturday afternoon was the scene the 1-hour qualifying race, the results of which determined the starting grid for the main race. Here, Hughes' #22 was 5th, while the #23 of Krumm finished 8th. In addition, Ara was 14th and Wendlinger 15th.

Under a curtain of low, dark clouds, the main race in Round 2 of the FIA GT1 World Championship faced its start. The pair of cars on the front row and the 4th-place starter were Aston Martins, while in 3rd there was a Maserati. GT-Rs would start from the inside of the third row and the outside of the 4th row.

Hughes' #22 GT-R rose to 4th immediately after the start, while Krumm, who had briefly gone off, was 9th. The #4 and #3 car (Wendlinger) followed right behind. The Safety Car was called out on the 2nd lap after another car caught fire.

Immediately before coming into the pits, Krumm set up to attack one of the Maseratis. Both cars had a good battle, but a Corvette that joined in the fight caused both it and Krumm's GT-R to go off track.

Meanwhile, Hughes handed the #22 GT-R over to Campbell-Walter, who returned to the track in 3rd place, a position he would occupy to the flag. It was a calm, cool and collected first podium result for the GT-R.

In the #3 Swiss Racing Team GT-R, Moser went off track at a high-speed section of the circuit shortly after Wendlinger handed him the car. The machine sustained damage in the off. Though safe, Moser was taken to the Medical Centre as a precaution.

After the flag, the car in 2nd place car received a time penalty, promoting the #22 GT-R to 2nd overall. Following that, the machine that had won was disqualified after failing the post-race vehicle inspection, suddenly vaulting the NISSAN into the winner's position.

For this Silverstone round to be contested as the renowned 'Tourist Trophy' was an honour. That Hughes/Campbell-Walter won this trophy has a special resonance among British people.

The pair commented, 'To hold this Tourist Trophy in our hands is special, as meaningful as the joy of taking the first world championship victory for the NISSAN GT-R.' Further activity in the next round at Brno (Czech Republic) can be expected.
