The fact that faster machines win is simply the natural course of events, but if the same machine always wins, interest in the races starts to fade. That is why the SUPER GT series has employed a system of weight handicaps. The more championship points a car earns, the heavier it is made, cutting its competitiveness.
Until last year if a car's standings dropped, adjustments to performance were allowed by reducing the weight handicap or by opening the bore of a car's air restrictor. However, from this year that kind of adjustment has been removed, so that slower racing and deliberate attempts to place lower in the finishing order in an attempt to improve the car's performance for the next race will no longer be seen.
Weight handicaps are enforced at a rate of 2kg per championship point earned up to the 5th race, then at 1kg per point earned in the 6th and 7th races, followed by the final round which is run with no weight handicaps.
